I am a Spanish teacher looking to pair my students up with students from another independent school in Spain. I will have low intermediate to advanced students and we could alternate with an English class from Spain, to speak about current events and identity. We usually plan an exchange to Spain but this has been cancelled due to COVID 19. I envision connecting virtually once a week with a proposed topic that we would have our students prepare for in advance. Please let me know if you are interested.

WHY?

It’s important for young people to build friendships in different parts of the world. Most students cannot travel widely. They do, however, have access to the world at their fingertips. But as a former high school teacher, I’m well aware of the pitfalls in relying on social media. This is an opportunity for them to create deep friendships by exploring their hopes, fears, and dreams, under the supervision of big-hearted educators. In the process, everyone involved will be a part of a movie that celebrates the best part about schools – our students.

Watch the videos with your students. What we are looking for is a creative response from one or more of your students, on video, preferably “in character”. But it could also be something like a student explaining what the video meant to them, or to volley a question back. Keep in mind we’re looking to keep a two month conversation going – one video exchange per week.

Learning Life, a nonprofit education lab based in Washington DC, USA, runs a Family Diplomacy Initiative (FDI) as a Facebook group. FDI connects families across borders to share and learn from each other about their viewpoints and lives. In April-December 2020, we are running a food culture project that is having families worldwide photographically answer six food culture questions, like "what does breakfast look like in your family?" and "what's a food trend in your country?" Anyone on Facebook can join the group here:

My students and I have realized that not enough kids around the world are aware of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs.) Rather than relying on social media and the internet to promote SDG awareness, we're going "old school" by raising funds to purchase and distribute posters (nice ones - 24 " x 36", laminated) for classrooms around the world. Think about it - a poster on a classroom wall never needs electricity or a wifi connection - it's always "on."

We would like to encourage teachers to join us by agreeing to have 2 FREE posters sent to them. We even pay for the postage. Teachers who receive the 2 posters are kindly asked to hang one poster in their classroom (and, of course, engage your students in discussions about the SDGs) and then send the second poster to a school overseas with whom you might establish a joint SDG project over the coming year.

Let's go global with the SDGs! Contact me at ghamlin@rsu71.org or on Twitter at @207teacherguy if you'd like us to send posters to you.

Thanks,

EXPLORE all of these global projects in more detail via the Flat Connections website. We have created an interactive timeline, embedded on the website, but also available online via the H5P site. Make sure you put it into full-screen mode for best effect. This will help you PLAN to join one or more projects this year.

DISCUSS the possibilities with others in your school - build persuasive arguments around learning objectives, curriculum objectives and state/national standards - you know global collaborative learning aligns with much of what you do in the classroom already in terms of literacy, ICT skills, global competency and intercultural understanding

ENCOURAGE others in your school to join you and take advantage of one of the Bronze, Silver or Gold subscription levels. If you are a 'lone wolf' in your school don't worry, the Teacherpreneur subscription is a cost-effective entry into a supportive community of other networked global educators

APPLY to join a Flat Connections global project NOW - 2018-1 projects start in February, March and April. 2018-2 projects start in August, September and October. So much choice! So many possibilities! Make sure you READ the global projects web page first and choose a subscription level, then APPLY via the Flat Connections shop.

ASK QUESTIONS - come to the online information meeting at the end of January (invitation RSVP via the newsletter) - meet Julie Lindsay and the Flat Connections Project Managers - ask questions, find out exactly what you need to know to be able to join

Make 2018 the year of onlien global collaboration - ask how Flat Connections can help you do this.

I'm the co-founder of this community and to pay the bills, I am an ed tech consultant and adjunct faculty member at National Louis University in Chicago. Next month, I'm presenting at this teacher education conference in Ireland (last year it was in LA; it alternates between the US and another country each year): http://www.gratek.ie/mite2018/index.php.

One of my sessions will focus on the GEC and global collaboration in general. Over the years, I've noticed that many professors require students to join our community here and participate in our conference. Or, they are required to watch conference recordings.

I am asking three things of you:

1) If you require your students to use our resources here, please describe how you use them and what the benefit has been to your students.

2) If you would like to collaborate with other teacher educators, let me know and I'll pass along your contact info to teacher educators I meet in Ireland.

3) I am teaching a global collaboration workshop online in April for NLU, and if you would like your students to collaborate with mine, let me know and we can plan some activities together.

Thanks for your help and input,

My name is Kaitlyn Clements and I am an intern at D.C. Public School's central office with the Global Education Department.

Currently, we are seeking to build partnerships with schools around the world to participate in a virtual exchange program in order to give the students in our district the unique opportunity to be world-thinkers and engage in an increasingly global community. We believe that global education contributes to the student’s overall learning as well as helping them to be inquisitive, informed and active world citizens. The virtual exchange program will help us with this goal. This program gives teachers in our district the opportunity to connect with international schools as to develop a global curriculum including but not limited to: global content, cultural exchange, and international collaboration. We would like to make it possible for classrooms and teachers both in D.C. and abroad to connect and work together to plan and initiate exchanges that would provide an invaluable educational experience.

Please feel free to take a look at our website and the programing we offer: https://dcpsglobaled.org/. If your school is interested in connecting with U.S classrooms through live virtual exchange or video exchange where time zone differences are a concern, please fill out the survey using this URL: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeOVTI8g78WLM8EbC5nObT05GQZ-ay5DmAx_jEJJekedpQqnA/viewform?usp=sf_link . I created a website called Globe to Go (globetogo.com) in order for educators to find a variety of global education resources in one location. As a teacher I struggled to find resources on one website, so I decided to create my own. I am looking for educators that would like to contribute to Globe to Go in order to create a comprehensive website for global education.
