Gollnick & Chinn (2017) write that “[m]ulticultural education is a construct that acknowledges the diversity of students and their families and builds on the diversity to promote equality and social justice in education” (p. 19). For multicultural education “to become a reality in the formal school situation, the total environment must reflect a commitment to multicultural education" (Gollnick & Chinn, 2017, p. 25). For the online educator who often works off-site with a diverse, international student population, this might seem challenging. Thankfully, Gollnick & Chinn (2017) provide a framework from which the online educator and the online institution can actively work to acknowledge and build upon student diversity in order to promote equity, equality, and social justice in all educational environments.

This session shares practical strategies for promoting a mindfully multicultural classroom in the online classroom and university. In order to best support the ultimate goal of improving the online learning experience, we explore the challenges and share strategies from a dual-sided lens. The session explores both student-focused and faculty-focused perspectives, tools, and strategies.

OnEdMentors Connect: Personalized Professional Mentorships to Build Capacity in Education

Quality education rests on many factors. As a Global Goal, teacher lifelong learning is a key contributor to cultivating skill and building capacity. In a global world, equity and inclusivity can come from people’s access to others for the purpose of collaboration, idea sharing and building, skill development, reflection, and much more. The goal of ONEdMentors Connect is to help improve teacher capacity by giving educators opportunities for personalized and self-directed mentorships without borders.

In February 2017, when voicEd Radio was just beginning, Noa Daniel was invited to become part of a panel of educators interested in diving deeply into educational trends and issues on a weekly radio show called OnEdMentors. The show began with a focus on supporting preservice teachers and has evolved to be a place where a variety of aspects of education are discussed in order to support preservice, new and seasoned teachers alike. This has become the longest running show in the growing community and a hub of educational conversation, resources and springboards. The hosts, Stephen Hurley (chief catalyst and founder), Derek Rhodenizer and Noa Daniel, wanted to find a way to extend this climate of collaboration beyond the radio.

Leigh Cassell, an educational change maker and innovator, founded Digital Human Library (dHL) in 2011 to address the urban and rural gap in education by providing students with digital access to people, places and ideas from around the world. Today, Digital Human Library creates opportunities for thousands of K-12 teachers and students to learn with the world through social innovation projects, interactive 1:1 video conferences, engaging live streamed educational programs, and the largest collection of educational virtual tours and virtual reality of the web. dHL is a resource that provides teachers and students with unlimited access to the field trip experience, anytime, anywhere at no cost.

In January, Noa and Leigh started talking about how they could use the dHL and voicEd Radio spaces to extend the OnEdMentors offering. Over many months, they have developed a collaborative inquiry to explore how they could create a framework for teacher self-directed learning through mentorships called OnEdMentors Connect.

Join us to learn more about the OnEdMentors Connect mentors and mentees, and how OnEdMentors Connect has evolved to become a collaborative inquiry project in the making. Our presentation will showcase each phase of the project—from the pilot leading to full open access for educators in Ontario and beyond beginning September 2019. Our goal is connect and collaborate with other educators so we can extend our understanding of how to iterate this offering in order to make it accessible to educators from across the globe and populate the OnEdMentors Connect Catalogue in Digital Human Library. Let’s work together to improve teacher agency and efficacy and to promote quality personalized professional learning for all.

Most global educators have a challenging relationship with the “Fs of Global Education.” The Fs, which include cultural facets like Food, Festivals, Flags and Fashion, are those elements of culture we can see most easily. There’s nothing wrong with exploring the observable aspects of culture, of course, but staying there can create superficial learning experiences, even leading to cultural misrepresentation and stereotypical assumptions about other cultures. This session will offer practical strategies for using the Fs as an entry point for investigations and engagement which dig beneath the surface and develop a more nuanced sense of culture for students.

New media encourages innovative opportunities for agile engagement in global collaborative discussion. Achieving this level of collaborative engagement can occur with global connectivity and collaborative discussions in a new construct called participatory spontaneity. Participatory spontaneity is the constructivist interplay among many voices and viewpoints. Participatory spontaneity has application to global citizenship’s approach to “understand, see, and act” (Brigham, 2011). The spontaneity of participatory discussion among audiences across the globe is necessary to engender global interconnections, interdependence, and collegial understanding for global problem-solving. Participatory spontaneity encourages perspective sharing, interconnections, diversity, critical thinking, and social justice. What does participatory spontaneity look like in online global areas? How do we know when it is achieved? In this session we’ll discuss key characteristics and emerging research-based best practices of participatory spontaneity and how you can achieve it with global audiences to positively impact teaching and learning.

Session idea:

Due to the gradual globalisation process, people all around the world often face similar challenges in many different realms. This is equally true for the employment and education. The unemployment, and especially the youth unemployment, is a serious issue in many countries around the globe. In Europe itself, it is a pressing problem that needs to be addressed by proper policies, initiatives, education and support measures.

Youth unemployment as a global issue hinders the development not only by its negative effect on economic growth and productivity, but, predominantly, by wasting the potential of young people and limiting their chances to develop necessary skills and competences, as well as gather experience. Youth unemployment may cause deskilling, social exclusion and raises the risk of poverty. For this reason, many young people may feel trapped in the vicious circle finding themselves lacking experience to enter into long-time employment and in desperate need of support.

This loss of talent and skills hampers the development of whole regions and countries globally. The University of Economics and Innovation WSEI in Lublin has recognized the need to face this challenge. The University has addressed the issue in its numerous regional, national and international projects and initiatives raising the quality of education, adjusting it to the current labour market needs and promoting the entrepreneurial spirit among the young.

Nevertheless, apart from projects of a purely educational character, the University has also become the leader of the CaT – the Career Tree Project addressing career decision making and career indecision, work adjustment, and career education. WSEI together with partners worked on a set of concrete solutions aimed at increasing the quality of career counselling that may significantly improve the chances of young people on the labour market making them more likely to enter into long-term, high quality employment.

One of the issues, the project consortium has raised, was the need to assist young people in making the career-related decisions at the early stage. The career guidance existing at schools is still often insufficient not providing necessary knowledge on characteristics of various occupations and personal predispositions students may possess. This in turn, leads to misrepresentation and complete misunderstanding of the career planning concept among young people, who base essential career related and education decisions on information from the Internet, media and recommendations of their peers. As young people may face difficulties assessing their strengths and predispositions, making career-related decisions proves to be difficult for them causing a high level of stress. The support often comes too late, preventing young people from making well-informed decisions concerning their education, skills development and, eventually, career path. Knowing how important this kind of decision is, often shaping young people’s further choices and the whole professional development, the project consortium recognised a demand to ensure a high quality level of counselling and support career counsellors’ in their work.

The solutions we have provided are mainly dedicated to the secondary school students, as well as career counsellors and advisors. CaT aimed at creating a modern tool enabling diagnosis and analysis of future career, as well as an appropriate education guidance. Our goal was to raise the quality of the process aimed to define capacities, aptitudes and professional interests of secondary/vocational schools students and adults, and conducting career guidance and career planning through creation of a modern (standardised on a representative group) modular system for analysis, diagnosis and education guidance of career that would support the work of career counsellors.

The project resulted in five main outputs. The first one was the model of predispositions and leading competencies for professions. The model contains the description of knowledge, skills and competences necessary for fulfilling professional tasks. It addresses around 200 professions, which makes the model extremely efficient and constitutes a vital source of knowledge on the professional competences mostly in need contemporarily.

The second project outcome was a modular system for diagnosis, analysis and education guidance of career. The system consist of 8 modules:

Module of professional interests

Module of structure and values of aims

Module of personal capacities,

Module of temperamental aptitudes,

Cognitive module,

Interpersonal module,

Module of business and enterprise skills,

Module of possessed qualifications.

This set of categories make is a basis for the right diagnosis and analysis of one’s predispositions and potential. As such it plays a significant role in the career guidance process and make the approach as personalized as possible.

The set of modules have been complemented by the handbook for diagnostic. The handbook enables the proper usage of the diagnostics tool and contains theoretical basics leading to development of the tool aimed and diagnosis beneficiaries. By development of the handbook the consortium tried to raise the reliability and accuracy of methods. The handbook consists in the description of the way of running the examination, procedure of calculating results and interpreting those results, as well as the description of professional competences types with regard to norms. As such the handbook is an instruction on how to implement the tool both dedicated to its technical and substantive part.

In order to help young people in planning of their career and education, the project developed also the personal portfolio for participant career. The portfolio is connected with Europass supplement and aims at presenting the learning outcomes gained during formal, informal and non-formal education. It is a crucial tool for young people to be used while their personal assessment of their achievements and realization of their future education targets.

Finally, the project has resulted in development of the methodical guidebook for career counsellors. The guidebook makes use of the modular system developed within the project. It includes assumptions and basics of method developed as well as practical guidelines on how to run the counselling process.

The project’s outcomes embrace the set of solutions for high quality career counselling. The central outputs are the model of predispositions and leading competences for occupations, the modular system for diagnosis, analysis and education guidance, as well as the personal portfolio creator that are to assist the young people in making the career-related choices. The solutions have been complemented by instructions and guidance for counsellors themselves on how to properly use the diagnostic tool and the modular system. By introducing these solutions the project team intended to make the career counselling process much more accurate and efficient by equipping counsellors with right tools supporting their everyday work.

Due to the proper structuring and ensuring high quality of the career counselling it is possible to limit the risks of career indecision and predispositions and career mismatch, as well as increase employability among the youth. This approach is fully reflected in our project. Moreover, we believe that our projects and the solutions provided are, due to the global character of the challenges in question, transferable to other countries. Although, there are certainly some country specific aspects of the solution provided, it still can be adjusted and transferred basing the solutions on the overall ideas and developed best practices. Therefore, the University intended to present the experiences and practices resulting from the project CaT and the solutions we have provided together with partners. We think it is necessary to share such knowledge and know-how in order to allow mutual learning and good practices transfer, as well as commonly address the challenges we all face across the globe.

The University information:

The University of Economics and Innovation in Lublin (WSEI) is a non-state higher education institution, funded in 2001, that offers full university degree programmes in a range of academic disciplines. With over 6 000 students, WSEI is a nationally recognized university, demonstrating a commitment to engage in partnerships with EU organizations and institutions to support education, training and research.

WSEI is perceived by independent institutions analysing quality of teaching in higher education as one of leading universities in Poland. For several years, the University has been recognized as the “Reliable School”, “The Academy of Leader” and distinguished with the“Good University – Good Work” label. WSEI has also been recognized as the most innovative and creative university in Poland in creating career prospects (competition organized by Academic Information Centre from Poznań) for three times. In educational rankings, WSEI receives highest marks in the country for: innovativeness, possessing funds from EU programmes, teaching conditions and scientific capacity. According to national ranking “Perspectives” 2017- WSEI is located on the 1st place among non-public universities in the region and on the 18th place in the general national list. For the 6 consecutive years WSEI has been certified as “The School of Leaders” by the Foundation of High Education Development. Furthermore, WSEI employees are also recognized with highest state awards as well as honorary titles of other universities.

All programs offered by WSEI are accredited by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The university is constantly broadening its education offer and raising its quality. It is developing and introducing innovative teaching and training methods and tools. Implementing a modular system of teaching at nearly all fields of studies may be a good example of this activity. The educational offer of the University is constantly modified by creating new programs and specialties to match the current demands of the labour market and respond to the needs of the students.

We owe our success mainly to a high level of education combining academic knowledge with a close relationship and practice of socio-economic life, which is very rare among higher education institutions. The high level of educational process is maintained by a diligently selected didactic staff with proper academic degrees and necessary academic experience. A great part of the staff has also significant practical experience derived from their non-academic activity. Such an excellent team is a guarantee for a high quality relating to economic realities of our region and meeting the EU requirements.

The high level of educational process is maintained by almost 400 diligently selected didactic staff with proper academic degrees and necessary academic experience. WSEI also possesses excellent didactic facilities (11 laboratories, e.g. modern audio-visual and multimedia labs) to support teaching and learning experience, engage in disturbing research activity, as well as build bridges between education, business and industry.

Transfer of knowledge and innovation between business units, public institutions and academic bodies plays a crucial role, particularly in regional context. As one of the leading institutions in educational market, WSEI understands the value it brings to the city and the region; positioning itself as an "enterprise university" and embedding innovation and creativity in the heart of all its activities. By embracing fully its social and economic responsibilities, WSEI demonstrates the key role universities play in leading the development of the region. At the core of our enterprise-led approach there is the development of the enterprise culture, which is focused on providing opportunities for students to fully engage with business, the community and the public sector.

Flipped learning is an instructional approach in which instructor-centric lectures are moved out of the classroom into the individual learning space (“homework”). Pre-class content is successively enriched with L2 comparative information. Scaffolded tasks invite student groups to collaborate on analyzing and evaluating the content and to create responses in the target language. These three interactions (analysis, evaluation, creation) constitute the highest levels of Bloom’s revised taxonomy and are frequently neglected in standard L2 instruction, which concerns itself with memorization of vocabulary, understanding grammar, and applying grammar and lexical items. While such conventional instruction uses the foreign culture as a mere backdrop to the acquisition of a new language, flipped learning enables instruction that is explicitly based on exploring the L2 culture, employing grammar and vocabulary as tools in the process.

The session will provide practical examples to demonstrate the planning of a flipped unit with cross-cultural critical thinking content that promotes global competency and 21st century skills.

A World of #CollaborativePD: Build Your Global PLN Twitter Chathttps://actionableinnovations.global/forum/topics/a-world-of-collaborativepd-build-your-global-pln-twitter-chat2017-11-04T16:41:57.000Z2017-11-04T16:41:57.000ZJennifer Williamshttps://actionableinnovations.global/members/JenniferWilliams660

Your Name and Title: Dr. Jennifer Williams, Director of Education Strategy

Challenge Based Learning (CBL) is an inductive pedagogy that allows students to identify a real-world problem that interests them and then learn what they need to know in order to solve the problem. Information gained from doing assignments and projects can result in long term retention of the information and make the student feel like their school work has a purpose. A challenge-based learning experience is a learning experience where the learning takes places through the identification, analysis and design of a solution to a sociotechnical problem. The learning experience is typically multidisciplinary in all core subjects, takes place in an international context and aims to find a collaboratively developed solution, which is environmentally, socially and economically sustainable. Let's propose solutions to global problems, and take action. The approach asks students to reflect on their learning and the global impact of their actions and publish their solutions to a worldwide audience.

A global collaboration project doesn't just happen overnight. Like any successful project, it requires excellent planning, innovative ideas, clear goal and must-have tools for digital collaboration and communication. In this session, we will explore the benefits of learning in a global classroom and becoming a global educator. We will also look at some of the digital tools that I have found beneficial to connecting with schools around the world.

While we teach students to engage in more emotionally intelligent thought processes, are we giving them opportunities to act on those thoughts?

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

Mindfulness and empathy are two of the most popular buzz words in education these days. It is awesome that some educators are leading the charge in shaping the hearts, minds and emotional intelligence skills of today’s learners. While this is being done, greater focus must be placed on helping students actually become humanitarians on a mission to mitigate global crisis. In this session strategies and solutions will be shared with stakeholders – leaders, teachers and content designers that will inspire and prepare them to institute programs and opportunities for students to learn how to effectively and appropriately act on their E.I. thought processes, and take inspiring action s towards solving real–world problems.

As we place greater focus on preparing students to be globally competent 21st Century citizens who are courageous to effect sustainable changes, we must provide them with opportunities to not merely think positively or be mindful, but to more importantly, be confident to translate their good thoughts into good deeds that will effect great change in society. We must challenge ourselves as educators to challenge students to become more active citizens of the world through learning, questioning, creating, and engaging in meaningful, authentic opportunities within a global context. This session will challenge, inspire and prepare stakeholders – school leaders, curriculum designers, teachers- to produce content and opportunities, and institute appropriate programs, opportunities and call to actions that will teach students how to be active humanitarians - psycho-socially fit and globally competent 21st Century citizens - who are prepared to make life-changing global impact in the world in which they live.

Our World Religions class has studied several of the major religions but we are an Episcopal school and want to better understand what part religion plays in the life of teenagers around the world. For example, does religion affect diet, education and/or access to education, ability to play sports or read books or question authority? Does it impact day to day life, or just holidays? How or does it affect what teenagers watch, how they respond to social media? And do the religious conflicts currently being played out on the world stage impact them, and if so how? Is there anything that teenagers can do now to lessen those conflicts or at least to help/support those impacted by them?

Short Session Description: A student led conversation on the state of gender, ethics and equity in the world.

Session Strand (use the "tag"): 2017students

Full Session Description: Chatham Hall, an all-girls boarding school in Virginia, will facilitate a discussion, live on the internet, with any middle or highschool of any gender balance that wants to participate. This is a video conference session, so audio and video will be helpful. We can take chat requests, but those will be limited.

This will be a student led conversation. The format will be conversational rather than ‘report-based’. The core topic will be 'Climate Change', but that can include any perspective on those words. The changing climate of the world (temperature, religion, gender, war, etc), the changing climate of our schools, the influx of technology, popular media, news etc. For this session (see schedule for others), the primary topics will be on the climate of gender relations and global ethics.

We invite you to join us, whenever you can and for however long you’d like! Our hope is to make this a monthly (or more) gathering, to facilitate relationship building and intercultural understanding.

The overall purpose of these sessions is to give our students global insight into the workings and thoughts of those in other areas of the world. What do we think about and why? How does our place on the planet effect our thought process? Why do we fear that which is different?

Link to GlobalEdCon Session Proposal (full URL with http://): http://www.globaleducationconference.com/forum/topics/conference-proposal-webday

Other Websites / URLs Associated with Your Session:

Your Bio: Sean Terwilliger has been working in boarding schools, both US and abroad for nearly 20 years.
