Non-profits are offered a complimentary 20-minute session and can partner with GLOW for an additional 50-minute session.

The basic conference will be free to attend, and we encourage everyone interested in experiential and global learning to submit a proposal, including first-time presenters. Companies and non-profits interested in sponsoring, participating, or presenting should contact Lucy Gray at lucy@lucygrayconsulting.com for details before submitting a proposal.

The Proposal Submission Process

We encourage you to submit proposals as early as possible. As soon as your proposal is accepted, you may select from the available presentation times (the time choices become increasingly limited closer to the event). Individuals may submit more than one proposal; companies and non-profits must be supporting partners to present.

Once submitted, your presentation proposal will be posted on the Actionable Innovations Global community, with the opportunity for members of this network to view, comment on, and/or "like" your presentation proposal. This will give you and the other members of our professional learning community the chance to share ideas and make connections before, during, and after the conference. Additionally, it will allow you to gauge the popularity of your topic or approach.

Presentation Formats & Guidelines

The GLOW Conference highlights important work in developing global competencies and experiential learning. One of its chief goals is to present practical, actionable steps that all attendees can take in their own contexts to implement these educational approaches. This emphasis distinguishes the GLOW Conference from many other educational conferences: we want to showcase effective educational approaches and make it easy for others to try those approaches in their own teaching and learning contexts.

To achieve this, we would like all proposed conference sessions to consist of 2 parts: a main theme and a section focused on actionable advice. You may split your presentation half and half between these two sections or dedicate two-thirds to your main theme and one-third to actionable advice. Your proposal should outline the content you wish to include for both of these sections:

Main theme (50–66% of the total presentation): Echoing most educational conferences, this section explores the theme, topic, or approach you wish to address;

Actionable advice (50–33%): Unique to the GLOW Conference, this section offers practical advice for others about how you’ve managed challenges with implementing this approach in your own learning context, advice for resources that you’ve found particularly useful in these efforts, lessons you've learned that have led you to modify or adapt your approaches, or references to specific communities who have helped support your thinking and work.

Short presentations of 20 minutes (half session) and long presentations of 50 minutes (full session) are available. All sessions — including Q&A — must be completed within these allotted times; sessions going longer than their given time slot may be terminated by the moderator. All sessions will be hosted on the Hopin platform. You will be responsible for familiarizing yourself with this platform and reviewing provided training materials.

Proposals must contain original content reflecting the work and ideas of the presenter, with all non-original content (including text, images, audio, and video) properly attributed to its author or creator. Plagiarism will result in participants being permanently banned from conference activities.

All presentations will be recorded with recordings released under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs License.
By submitting a proposal, you agree to these terms.

I'm the co-founder of this community and to pay the bills, I am an ed tech consultant and adjunct faculty member at National Louis University in Chicago. Next month, I'm presenting at this teacher education conference in Ireland (last year it was in LA; it alternates between the US and another country each year): http://www.gratek.ie/mite2018/index.php.

One of my sessions will focus on the GEC and global collaboration in general. Over the years, I've noticed that many professors require students to join our community here and participate in our conference. Or, they are required to watch conference recordings.

I am asking three things of you:

1) If you require your students to use our resources here, please describe how you use them and what the benefit has been to your students.

2) If you would like to collaborate with other teacher educators, let me know and I'll pass along your contact info to teacher educators I meet in Ireland.

3) I am teaching a global collaboration workshop online in April for NLU, and if you would like your students to collaborate with mine, let me know and we can plan some activities together.

Thanks for your help and input,

The Global Education Forum, co-sponsored by Asia Society and Penn GSE, will be held on October 16 and 17 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The conference is an opportunity to engage in a critical conversation between K–12 and higher education educators about how best to prepare students for a global world. By attracting educators from around the world to discuss best practices, promising programs and research, the Global Education Forum will highlight the importance of learning with and from different education systems to help inform our own practice.

Through a series of keynote speakers, hands-on workshops and networking opportunities, participants will explore how to prepare students to be globally competent, review trends and best practices in teacher and leadership development, as well as develop strategies for teaching and assessing critical 21st century skills.

For the past eight years, the Asia Society has conducted the Partnership for Global Learning Conference, while Penn GSE, in partnership with the American Friends of Winchester College, has conducted a global education event for the past five years. This newly-created conference signifies the forging of two outstanding efforts and a diverse audience into one signature event.

Proposals for Breakout Sessions and "Teacher Swap Shops" are still being accepted until May 10. Registration for the event will open in mid-May. Feel free to contact me with any questions or suggestions!

As most US schools are back in session this month, I thought I'd take the opportunity to send a quick update about our community and upcoming virtual conference.

If you are new to the Global Education Conference Network, we are a 19,000 member strong community of educators and others interested in connecting classrooms and furthering educational opportunities for all. My conference co-chair, Steve Hargadon, and I strongly believe that educators need to connect with others globally in order to establish the foundation for collaboration; our community is designed to foster these professional relationships. Please read our mission so that you fully understand our purpose.

So what can you do here year round in the Global Education Conference Network? You can explore our resources, participate in our discussion forums, share an event, or join an affinity group. Please post resources, events, questions etc related to global education in these areas. Relevant posts will be broadcasted on our social media channels in order to promote connections. For example, if you have a project that you are running and would like other classrooms to participate, post a detailed description in our discussion forum. Then, I will post it to our Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and LinkedIn accounts. Hopefully, this will help you get participants for your project!

We are now gearing up for our fifth annual free, online conference which takes place every November. The call for proposals is now open and we encourage educators and non-profit organizations to submit proposals that relate to our mission. Do this early rather than later so that you can book your presentation at your time of choice; the schedule gets rather full as we get closer to the conference. Check out our accepted proposals and our keynote speakers as well; more are going to be announced shortly. Also, we are looking foradvisory board members, partner organizations, and volunteer moderators for the conference.

For your convenience, we've developed a few digital flyers that we hope you will post to social media and send to potentially interested colleagues:

Dear GEC Members:

Greetings from Beijing, China, where I'm attending the Learning 2.012 conference which kicks off October 11 ( Beijing time; some sessions will be streaming). I've had an amazing week so far, visiting the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and interacting with some amazing international school educators. China is an extraordinary place, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to visit. My experiences this week have reinforced my belief that we must connect our classrooms and teach our children to understand and learn from each other if we are to address the challenges facing our planet.

That said, I'm pleased to announce several new items pertaining to our community and conference. First, the deadlines for proposals for both the standard Global Education Conference and the iEARN Annual Conference and Youth Summit have been extended from October 15 to October 29, 2012. You have nearly a two week extension to get your proposals in!

This also means that we have extended the deadline for film exhibition submissions.
Courtesy of Christopher Tully and his students at the Middle Bucks Institute of Technology in Pennsylvania, USA, we have two new videos on our web site, one of which explains the conference proposal process and the other gives a brief overview of our online community.
April 5, 2012 – The third annual Global Education Conference, a free week-long online event bringing together educators and innovators from around the world, will be held Monday, November 12 through Friday, November 16, 2012. The entire conference will be held online using the Blackboard Collaborate platform (formerly known as Elluminate/Wimba) with the support of iEARN worldwide as the conference founding sponsor, who will be running their annual international conference in conjunction with this event.

The Global Education Conference is a collaborative, inclusive, world-wide community initiative involving students, educators, and organizations at all levels. It is designed to significantly increase opportunities for building education-related connections around the globe while supporting cultural awareness and recognition of diversity.

The conference seeks to present ideas, examples, and projects related to connecting educators and classrooms with a strong emphasis on promoting global awareness, fostering global competency, and inspiring action towards solving real–world problems. Through this event, attendees will challenge themselves and others to become more active citizens of the world. Participants are encouraged to learn, question, create, and engage in meaningful, authentic opportunities within a global context!

Last year’s conference featured 340 general sessions and 18 keynote addresses from all over the world with over 10,000 participant logins. For those of you who attended last year, what are some strategies you used when participating in the conference? Are there any tools that helped you manage your conference schedule? How did you deal with time zone differences? Any sessions that you found particularly useful or inspiring?

My tool suggestions to start:

Use Google's Chrome browser as it has a translation bar

Timeanddate.com is handy for time zone conversions

Another recent find has been World Time Buddy

I also add world clocks in various cities across time zones to my Macbook Pro's dashboard and to the clock app on my iPhone

I'm also interested in hearing how schools can use the Global Education Conference in creative ways for professional development. For instance, last year one GEC member's school projected various sessions in a teachers' lounge, so staff could drop in during lunch or their prep periods to catch a bit of the conference.

Thanks,

Sessions will be held around the clock to accommodate time zones, and the best part is that the entire event is free!

In other conference news, our first set of keynote speakers has been announced. Keynotes will include Chris Dede and Howard Gardner of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Alan November of November Learning, Ewan McIntosh of NoTosh Limited, and Ed Gragert of iEARN-USA. We are thrilled that these distinguished speakers will share their expertise with us. More keynotes will be announced in the next week or so, so please stay tuned!

Additionally, we have a new mission statement that I think will clarify the purpose of this event. Thanks to the GEC Advisory Board Leadership Team for collaborating on this!

The Global Education Conference is a collaborative, world-wide community initiative involving students, educators, and organizations at all levels.
Through this event, it is our hope that attendees will challenge themselves and others to become more active citizens of the world. Let us learn, question, create, and engage in meaningful, authentic opportunities within a global context!

Here's what you need to know right now regarding conference housekeeping items:

The Call for Proposals is still open through October 31. Please follow the outlined directions.

If you have submitted a proposal, make sure you join the presenters group in the GEC community. This is very important if you want to receive updates.

Session acceptances will be rolled out starting October 25. We will start chronologically with the first submissions.

The conference schedule will not be posted until acceptances go out. Speakers will then have the opportunity to self-schedule their presentations.

This is not an ICT conference nor a general education conference. Make sure your proposals are tied to our mission.

The GEC leadership team will be going through proposals and leaving suggestions for improving your proposals. Please follow through on these comments or contact us if you have questions.

Volunteers are needed to moderate sessions, so please join the volunteer group if you are interested in helping. Training will be provided if you're not familiar with the Blackboard Collaborate platform.

Our partnership list is growing. If you are a non-profit, fill out the form to partner at no cost with us. If you're a commercial entity, email hargadon@gmail.com for information about how you can be involved.

Badges are now available for download. Add our icon to your Twitter or Facebook profile; post a badge to your blog or web site if you are a volunteer, presenter or advisory board member.

We need help with outreach. Please use this press release and poster to let others know about the event.

We particularly want to reach student groups and ministries of education. Increased student participation is sought, and we hope that ministries of education will have the capacity to inform a great number of educators about this conference opportunity.

Our celebration coordinator, Pheo Martin, is looking to create slideshows of conference presenters and attendees. Read her post for more details.

Finally, a big shout out and thank you to EdSurge for mentioning our event repeatedly in their happening newsletter. If you haven't checked out this site dedicated to educational innovation, take a look.

That's all the news that fit to blast out to you right now... please let us know if you have any questions or concerns either through email or through a discussion post in the community.

Tips for Successful Global Education Conference Proposalshttps://actionableinnovations.global/forum/topics/tips-for-successful-global-education-conference-proposals2011-10-05T13:19:56.000Z2011-10-05T13:19:56.000ZLucy Grayhttps://actionableinnovations.global/members/LucyGray

Hi Everyone -

Steve and I are thrilled about the 60+ proposals that have been submitted thus far for the 2011 Global Education Conference. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to participate!

This is a very inclusive conference in that we want every proposal to be accepted. We value your ideas and initiatives, and there are guidelines you need to follow in order to insure a quality experience for conference attendees.

Here are a couple of reminders about your proposals:

Our mission is to at increase opportunities for globally-connecting education activities and initiatives. This means that the event is solely focused on presenting ideas, examples and organizations related to connecting educators and classrooms around the world. Our goals include developing multiculture awareness and global competency in students and teachers as well as bringing attention to social justice topics.

This is not a technology conference. Proposals can highlight how technology enhances the aforementioned mission and goals, however. Effective teaching and learning never focuses on the tools themselves, but on the processes and outcomes of using such tools.

The event is not solely focused on general education topics or innovative learning. Your ideas should again be tied to the mission and goals. Steve Hargadon is working on a developing a Learning 2.0 online conference that will house sessions that fit this category. More details to come on this. Last year, we had a strand for Learning 2.0 sessions, but this year we are entirely focused on globally-connecting education activities and initiatives.

When submitting your proposal, please follow the directions provided on the call for proposals page. You must use the template provided. Attachments are only for supplementary materials that you would like to provide.

Attendees will be determining sessions that they would like to attend by reading the decriptions in your proposals. Please make sure that your proposals are compelling and tied to the mission and goals of the conference. There should be clear language in your proposal that indicates how your topic is tied to global collaboration. The more detailed information you provide, the better.

If you would like someone to review your proposal before you post it, or have questions, start a discussion forum post and ask for guidance. Perhaps a member will respond to your query. I also suggest that you review the current proposals to get an idea of the range of topics.

Make sure you are selecting the correct discussion forum category (2011 Global Education Conference) when submitting your proposals. You also must use one of the following tags: 2011Teacher, 2011Students, 2011Policy, or 2011Curricular. Your proposal will not appear in the proper place on our web site unless you do this. This is very important.

You can edit your proposals any time up until October 15th when proposals are due.

We are taking suggestions for potential keynote speakers. These suggestions should be for high level, well known thought leaders whose work addresses the mission and goals of the conference. There will be featured speaker opportunities for our partners. Again, more information will be forthcoming on this. Keynotes, however, will be invite only.

Finally, we are looking for a volunteer coordinator for our leadership team. If you are interested in volunteering in this position, please send me an email at elemenous@gmail.com.

I hope this clarifies questions you may have about the conference, and that these ideas will help you to refine your conference proposals. I've attached our most recent press release and I hope that you will pass it along to your colleagues and friends.

Please let me know if you have any questions! We're here to help you participate!

Thanks,
