We are a middle school grade 7-8 French Class located in NJ, USA. We are looking to connect with another French/English speaking class. Our students are looking to develop their French language skills. We would like to communicate with a English speaking French class. This project will allow both classes to develop language skills as well as exchange cultural information.
We have a number of options available including a class wiki, emails, skype, blog etc..

I have a Grade 7/8 French as a Second Language class in Ontario, Canada. I am very interested in connecting with another class as well. I have been trying to find ways to my students an audience for their writing and a friend suggested finding a "pen pal" class. I hope your class would be interested in communicating with us!
I would have to speak with their homeroom teacher to see what communication options are available to our students.
Hi Jackie,
I think we could put something together. The teacher i am working with is teaching French classes that are the same grade level. She has just started to use Wiki's with her students. The wiki will allow for threaded discussions and the creation of pages of content. We could start with a common wiki. The students could communicate through the discussion boards. We can also have them share content on the pages. I can create the wiki for everyone. Would your students have access to the internet in school and/or at home to use this? If not we can come up with something else.
The wiki could be used to share writing, videos, digital stories, and pictures. We also have the ability to video conference using Skype.
Hi Doug,
That sounds terrific! The 7/8 homeroom teacher has had her students create their own wikis using PB works, but I know that only people with access to their sites can view the information. I don't know how well their existing wikis would work for e-pal discussion. I agree that a common wiki would be a good place to start and we do have Internet access at school and nearly all of them have home access as well. Are you still willing to create the wiki for the two classes? If not, I can talk to their homeroom teacher and I am quite sure that she would help me do so. If you are willing create one, what information would you need from me to set up the wiki for the schools?
This project should be very exciting for them! I have had them post a few of their French assignments on their wikis, but the same response keeps coming from their audience (their parents) "It sounds great, but I don't really understand." Communicating with other FSL students may just be the spark they need to put their best writing forward.
Jackie,
I am sorry for the delay in getting back to you. For some reason the site did not email me to tell me that you responded. I will be happy to setup the wiki. All I would need is a list of first and last names for the students. I will create accounts for them on the wiki. We could use the discussion boards as well as the pages to communicate. I believe the two classroom teachers will be able to come up with a project or a plan to move forward.
Can we continue this discussion via email. My email address is dwalker@jefftwp.org. I will copy our French teacher on the emails. If you do the same with your teacher we can all start communicating about this.
