Around the World

Since 2001 my students have been following the voyages of Skipper Rich Wilson. Rich, a former math teacher in the Boston area, invites students to 'come on board' on his ocean voyages. In 2001 he raced against the record of the Mandarin, the clipper ship that sailed back in the days of the Australian Gold Rush. We followed him again as he sailed in 2003 from Hong Kong to NYC to break the record of the Sea Witch that sailed back in the days of the China Tea Trade. And in 2004 we followed him as he came in second place in the Transat 2004 from Plymouth, UK to Boston, MA. Rich uploaded blogs, podcasts, photos and videos of his voyage several times a week. We learned about the flying fish, the Aurora Australis, the dolphins that swam beside his boat, nutrition, sleep, and the amazing albatross. We tracked the weather and even made suggestions on the best route to take. Rich and an onshore team of experts answered our questions about the voyage. As Rich prepares for the Vendee Globe, around the world alone, he welcomes the students and teachers of the global community to 'come on board' again to join him as he sails his voyage. In previous voyages the whole experience was enhanced by sharing it with children in Hong Kong, Florida, Australia, and China. With a wonderful global community of students and teachers online now, it would be great to follow this journey from classrooms around the planet. Whether you check in the boat position on occasion or participate in many of the activities that are available online, it would be great fun to have you and your class join in on this epic journey.
