Short Session Description (one line):

A student’s perspective on the lack of global awareness in the modern education system and how to fix it.

Full Session Description (one paragraph minimum):

I would like to think that I’m globally aware for my age. Having been to seven continents by the age of 14, I had an opportunity to see the world, experience different cultures, and understand different perspectives to a whole different caliber than my peers. So when I’m sitting in my high school classes, I can’t help but to notice the lack of global awareness my peers have. However, at the same time, I can’t blame them. Are they given the resources in the modern education system to branch out and learn about the world they live in rather than just their cities and states? Why isn’t the education system evolving to embrace different cultures, different countries, and different perspectives through technology and the effective use of social media? After all, being familiar with such aspects would be extremely beneficial when entering the workforce.

In my seminar, I will be presenting  not only why it is an issue that the modern education system doesn’t allow support of global awareness at ease, but how to fix the predicament from a student’s perspective. It takes a lot to motivate high school students about concepts they are not familiar with: I would know, I’m one of them. But because I’m one of them, I have a unique perspective on how global awareness can be implemented effectively in the modern education system.

  • Hello Amanda,

I am so inspired to hear you expressing your voice to attempt to influence your educational experience.  I fully support this in my profession.  I often ask my students to become actively involved in the decision making process of education.  This is something I hope to see more of.  You are a true leader and I look forward to hearing more about what learners are thinking.

I empower my students to have a voice in their education.  Good luck with your efforts Amanda.
