Adaptive Learning Powered Spanish MOOC

Adaptive Learning and MOOCs

Hi everyone! I'm Scott Rapp, co-founder of Instreamia, an adaptive, video-based language learning platform. We've been developing edtech software for about a year now, and prior to that my career has been in data management systems as a consultant for fortune 500 companies. It's nice to meet all of you and I look forward to hearing from you!

I wanted to get your thoughts on this project we're working on. Here is the explanation of the difficulties with MOOCs and reason for our proposed solution:
As the global demand for higher education increases, and universities can´t keep up, many are searching for how education delivery will evolve to meet demand. Thousands have subscribed in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), but many are saying that they lack assessment capacity – one teacher can’t keep up with thousands of students, and the tests offer too little feedback too late.

We are creating what we think to be the solution: Fuse MOOCs with adaptive learning platforms.

The MOOC has great scaling benefits for offering instruction – why do we need to be in the same room as the professor when he is lecturing? It offers the benefits of the flipped classroom, students can study on their own time, and they can review lessons as many times as they need to. But how will they know whether they understand something? That’s where adaptive learning comes in.

The learner-centric adaptive learning platform assesses while students receive instruction. It uses thousands of data points to determine student understanding, and it can redirect learners to exactly the instruction they need. It even offers these analytics back to the professor in aggregate and for individuals. It fulfills the need for the students to receive feedback and be assessed, and does so instantaneously. An adaptive platform like this has been created for learning languages.

Instreamia is sponsoring the first-ever language MOOC, for first-year, college-level Spanish students. The course will be a combination of recorded video instruction, conversation practice with other students, and homework assignments given and evaluated through the integrated Instreamia learning platform.  In these assignments, students will practice listening recognition, vocabulary understanding, context comprehension, and grammar usage. For the first time, adaptive learning will combine with MOOC methodology to offer an unparalleled experience to the masses.

  • This is interesting please follow www.facebook.com/sofeproject and twitter.com/sofeproject so that I can share your services to the students. Thanks--Shauneil

P.S. Is this service always free or is it only free for this time period?

    • This is the only offering of the organized class we have planned so far. Our reason behind doing the course is to prove out our platform in blended learning scenarios, and we will sell subscriptions for classes (online or in person) who want to enhance their classrooms with the adaptive, native content powered platform.

Of course, if another teacher wants to do a MOOC as a public service, we may be able to sponsor it by allowing them to use the platform to power it. We may also offer other introductory courses for other languages if there is sufficient interest.
      • Ok sounds like an interesting plan that I can work with. I am in Miami, FL and I know first year Spanish so I will sign up for the course and take it and whoever I find would benefit from this platform will be notified. That's just how sofeproject.com does things! Collaboration makes things better. :)

Smile and have a great weekend.

        -Shauneil Scott

        • Glad to hear it! I'm sure you'll learn in the course, thanks for enrolling! Best of luck with sofeproject, it looks like a great source for good.
