Short Session Description (one line):

Add questions INTO video instruction for an engaging and accountable flipped / blended environment.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

Video is an integral part of our lives and the future of education, but it falls short. Video is a passive viewing experience, lacking strong teaching pedagogy; students zone-out, skip through content, and lack controlled guidance. As a teacher, I wanted a platform that makes video work for me and my best practices, including student interactivity, guided delivery, and actionable analytics.

In this session, Ben and Swaroop will introduce eduCanon--a free platform that empowers teachers to transform video into an engaging, active learning experience by adding questions INTO video (YouTube) instruction. Whether in a flipped or blended environment, eduCanon’s analytics help you understand student learning, remediate misconceptions, and plan tomorrow’s lesson!

    Hi Ben -

Thanks for your proposal.... I have two questions. First, are you representing a for profit company? and secondly, how does this relate to the mission of the conference? Technology is not our primary focus.

    • Hey Lucy,

We are a for-profit company. Though I consider myself an educator--I taught 8th grade science in Richmond, CA. OUr platform is not, in my mind, simply a tool to improve a teachers' efficacy in flipped and blended settings. I see eduCanon fostering relationships and collaboration between teachers across the globe. With our platform any teacher can create a lesson from any video. Then, this modular amalgam of questions and video content is share with students and the larger educator community. Teachers that like the lesson use, modifying its modular components to meet their students' needs and then resubmitting it to the global community to be interactively improved and, in this process, crowdsourcing the canon of subject material curated and collaboratively created by the global community of educators. eduCanon offers the medium through which lessons can effectively be shared and delivered--in a way that lesson plans can not.
I see eduCanon's presentation touching on these strands:
-showing teachers concrete examples of global collaborative projects
-elaborating the steps needed to participate in existing projects or to design projects
-describing profession development efforts to help teachers and students become globally competent
      Best,
      Ben

Sounds like a great tool, but as I just mentioned in an email, we have a policy on for profit companies regarding presenting.

        • Does that include having the main presenter be a teacher presenting on the topic?

          • Co-Chair

Yes, it does. Commercial pitches require sponsorship. Please talk to Steve if you have any questions: steve@hargadon.com.

And, just an FYI, this is not a technology conference. It is an event focused on global collaboration, global connections and the discussion of policies that increase education for all.
