Full Session Description: Media Literacy is a great vehicle for global collaboration or flat classroom projects. In today's current educational climate, teachers are required to address new media literacies that focus around digital citizenship and responsibility. Students are expected to learn and apply information, media and technology skills. As described in Lindsay and Davis' book Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds (2013), Global projects are about "connecting and bridging different people and different communities. Learning is not necessarily about learning one plus one, it is about different cultures and learning about the world as a whole." Global collaboration is essential in helping prepare students for the world today. This presentation will address a global project that was organized and executed this past year among students taking a media literacy elective at a school in New York and students attending a school in Japan. Japanese anime was used as a catalyst to spark conversation and global awareness among the students in New York and students in Japan. Students communicated through a wiki to share, post questions, interpretations, and responses to their viewing. The project included students in Japan teaching students in New York about Japanese culture and anime's context and subtext within popular Japanese culture. If teachers truly want to help prepare students for the future than what we do in our classroom should reflect this. Students need opportunities to interact with one another within their communities and globally. Students need ample opportunities to create and share using technology and digital media. This presentation will address how teachers can help students extend and apply knowledge in diverse and creative ways.
