    FINISHED

The conference has finished and so has this challenge. Please come visit us in Second Life to learn ore about the future of language practice. Bye for now!

  • Amazing.  Learning English has become a lot more interesting.  Would like to explore more about this.

    Thank you

  • How do I submit my photo?

All you have to do is take a photo with one or more persons in Second Life and either post it here, on our website (http://cyprischat.org), on our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cypris-Chat/131196093605068 or send it to me via email (address in my profile). You need to tell me three things:

    1. What is your avatar name?
    2. What is the name(s) of the person/people you are standing with and where are they from?
    3. Where did you take the picture?

Feel free to add your own comments, a poem, a joke, a story, or anything you'd like. Please send only one photo. You will only be paid for one.

That's it. If I receive enough pictures I'll put them together in a photo album and make a slideshow titled 2011 Global Education Conference Avatar Photo Challenge. Fun!

My avatar name is Professor Merryman. I went to Cypris Village and met so many nice people. This is my new friend. She is from Japan. Her name is Yuki23. She is really nice. We talked for a long time. I am looking forward to meeting her again.

Mike, people may not be familiar with Second Life and understand what Linden dollars are... I'm concerned that they may think this is real money. Can you elaborate on your project a bit more? Sounds like fun!

    • Yep. Sure thing. Second Life is a virtual world accessed by registering on the website (http://secondlife.com) then downloading and installing an application just like a video game. Once you have opened the application and logged in, you are dropped into an almost photo-realistic world built by the residents who live and commune there. Second Life can be a game for some people, but for education it is a place to build environements conducive for learning.

I created this challenge because on our island, Cypris Village, we have an English learning community. We sometimes have contests and challenges that help motivate our members to be more active and have more fun. The challenge I am offering here is something like a photo contest or reporter activity we sometimes do.

Linden dollars (L$) is the currency used in Second Life. This money can be used to buy clothing, buildings, cars, pets, jewelry and just about anything else you can imagine. Check the marketplace here: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/ Linden dollars are purchased with real money from the Linden exchange (log in required). You can read more about Linden dollars here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Second_Life

I am offering 100 Linden dollars (L$100 =  $0.25 USD) to English students of any age who come to Second Life and take a picture of themselves with a person from another country.
