Short Session Description (one line):
Experience ArLink, Creative Connections' international art exchange where students from partner classes in 35 countries create and share pieces of art that illustrate aspects of their culture they particularly value.
Full Session Description (one paragraph minimum):
Conference participants will learn about this innovative cultural exchange program that involves both low and high tech. Students in partner classes from 35 countries explore the meaning of culture and values, think through carefully what aspects of their culture they wish to share with their partners, and then create pieces of art of every day scenes that illustrate those cultural aspects. Once the art is exchanged, both classes treat their partners' pieces as primary sources as they discover fascinating similarities and differences between their respective cultures. Finally, the partner classes share their discoveries and questions with one another using higher tech internet postings and often live videoconferencing.
We hope to have a couple of participating teachers from the USA and overseas share their experiences with ArtLink and how their students have increased their cultural awareness and understanding and their global competency skills.
We also plan to involve conference participants by posting samples of recently exchanged student art and exploring with them (you!) the cultural insights they include.
