Full Session Description:

This session looks at efforts by the Institute at Havergal to help students develop knowledge and skills to engage effectively in our rapidly evolving world. Capitalizing on the strengths of women and girls, Havergal focuses on relationship-based community development partnerships. Students approach the world from a people-first perspective and commit to the ups and downs of partnership.

At Havergal, we challenge ourselves to engage and have impact with people, in partnership, with respect for perspective. Our focus is not on service or fundraising, but on partnership and achieving shared objectives. Those with whom we work know better than we do what they want and need in their lives.

In practice, our Students Act NOW and Global Experience Program (GEP) expose students to opportunities to engage in local and international initiatives to help build the self-efficacy and global capability that will enable them to contribute to the world in which they want to live and thrive. Through local and international experiences, students will develop the belief in their own abilities and in their capability to learn, acquire new skills and adapt to new situations. These experiences range from after-school partnerships to student-initiated partnerships that allow students to share in the lives of young people in Toronto and around the world.

Thus, the goal of this session is to stimulate dialogue on the various ways to enlighten, engage, enable, and empower young people to move beyond charity to social innovation.
