Short Session Description (one line): In this session you will learn how bringing the world into your K-5 classroom with new technology can help tackle prejudice before it begins.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

Over 70 years of research into inter-group contact theory has found that having a friend in a different group is the most powerful way to overcome prejudice. By bringing the world into the classroom, you have the opportunity to introduce peers from around the world. The more you work with multi-cultural and global education resources that move beyond geography, flags, and basic country facts, the more you can make global learning a personal intimate experience. And new technology is here to help you do so! Even for younger students that can’t navigate the Internet on their own yet.

Non-profit organization Globe Smart Kids is the maker of One Globe Kids education materials. We help young children grow up feeling safe, happy and excited about interacting with diverse people and in diverse contexts. Because in this 21st century, we need to be able to interact creatively and adaptively in culturally diverse settings.

  • Part 1-  The theory of cross-group friendship: interest in others outside of a child’s daily circle.

An introduction into the theory of cross-friendship and how travel, far and near, fosters openness to others. The window of 4 – 10 years is a formative phase where biases are formed, and also where imagination and imagery are key components of how children learn about the world.

  • Part 2 -  Things to work on in the classroom that will fuel cross-group friendships

There are conditions and circumstances that can make contact with peers more or less effective at reducing prejudice and teaching empathy. Knowing these can make our efforts much more successful. Like: Increasing empathy for others, Reducing anxiety about meeting and interacting with the “other”, and Increasing knowledge about other groups.

  • Part 3 -  How to use One Globe Kids in the classroom

Travel, and making friends around the world, is an amazing way to help children prepare for a diverse world. However, not every family or school has the means to do so. With the help of technology we can now offer children the next best thing. One Globe Kids is one of the resources out there.

  • Story Telling
  • All About Me
  • International connections
  • Country exploration
  • Global theme discussion, like water, electricity, play or traditions.
  • Part 4 - Q&A

One Global Kids is for profit, correct?

    • Hi Lucy,

One Globe Kids used to be owned by Round by Design a for-profit. However, all materials have been transferred to Globe Smart Kids, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Please let me know if you need more details.

      Best,

      Sanny
