Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
This session will focus on initiatives to promote accessibility and universal design for learning on a global scale through the use of mobile devices. The presenters, all of whom are Apple Distinguished Educators, will report on the status of accessibility initiatives within their respective regions: North America, Europe and Australia. They will also share their personal stories highlighting how the accessibility features of iOS devices have empowered them in their own work as educators and advocates for accessibility.
Part of the session will be dedicated to providing educators with an update on the latest accessibility features built into iOS 7, the latest version of the software for the iPad. For example, the new Switch Control features built into each of these operating system promise to make them more accessible to a wide range of individuals with motor and cognitive disabilities who rely on adaptive technologies such as switch systems.
Along with the new accessibility features of iOS 7, the presenters will share a number of tips and strategies for building more accessible content. They will share a checklist for building accessible content that was developed as part of a collaboration that started at the 2012 Apple Distinguished Educators Global Institute. This checklist is part of a Building Inclusive Learning Environments course that will be available to session participants as a resource to get started on their own efforts to build inclusive environments that allow all children to learn, and students at al levels to develop their creativity and find new ways in which they can express their ideas.
