Short Session Description (one line):
Can global competency be gained in school?
Full Session Description
The push for global competency is the latest manifestation of our continual discontent with traditional methods of classroom-based schooling. This provocative and interactive session will trace the historical trends in American and international education, culminating with the advent of ‘global citizenship’ and 21st Century Skills.
The predominant frameworks and standards for global competency will be discussed, with a focus on revealing gaps in the ability of classroom teachers to meet these demands. We will then consider the optimum contexts and methods for developing the skills associated with global competency, discussing the strengths and weaknesses of experiential learning, educational travel, classroom teaching, volunteer service, and extracurricular activities.
