Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
Our world indeed has turned to most violent in this century since its inception. From imperial and tribal wars or civil strife’s to natural disasters like diseases, wild fires, the hurricanes, name it; our societies have become exposed to the generic risks and vulnerability grounds where violence is always erupting. While developed countries may have controlled education systems, developing countries have survival systems, which has accelerated youth unemployment, less innovations, transfer of knowledge and finding the wisdoms behind the ‘search of educational knowledge.’ Yes, we live in Violent communities and are always ‘crime cautious’ when we walk around the streets. But aren’t we missing something about the dynamics of humanism and human transformation when we neglect to conceptualize and study the nature and origins of violence?
The main objective of this our presentation is to reconstruct or conceptualize where possible how violence has affected our communities, our children, and our education systems. Our discussion seeks to asks
a) what is violence?;
b) how is violence manifested in today’s society?; and
c) how does violence affect and shape our ‘futuristic identities.’
To encourage rich discussions at our session, we’ll focus on two grounded issues of case study , which we think, are of importance to all GEC members;
- Why early reconstructing violence in children is Key in conflict analysis, ie; the philosophy and psychology of violence in children and how its systemic even in adults. Violence is known to stem into the formulation of particular identity uniformities like aggressiveness, limited space for inclusion, among others.
- Deciphering the role of online distributions like Skype and social networks in contributing towards understanding violence and achieving peace in our communities of the world.
- Specifically, we will discuss Jeremy Gilley, founder of Peace One Day, as the driving force behind the Skype and Peace One Day partnership. Jeremy, previously an actor, launched the non-profit organization Peace One Day to document his journey to create the first annual day of ceasefire and non-violence. As a result of these efforts, the day was unanimously adopted in 2001 by United Nations member states, fixed as September 21 – Peace Day. We will review Web-based resources (see below) to get K-12 teachers involved in building bridges between classrooms world wide to discuss peace and promote Peace Day (Sep. 21st) each year.
