TITLE:
Crafting Global Learning Outcomes (GLOs) for Teaching the Ideals of Global Citizenship

Short Session Description (one line):

Creating Global Learning Outcomes for Globally Collaborative Classrooms in Higher Education

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

In this webinar, you will learn about some of the key steps involved when attempting curricular innovation through internationalization to create global collaborative classrooms in higher education, i.e., courses that are designed to connect students from two or more cultural/linguistic groups and co-taught by faculty from each group.   In the first part of the webinar, participants will learn about the different levels of course internationalization and then be introduced to some ways for integrating the ideals of global citizenship and global competencies into a globally-networked course.  In the second part of our presentation, we use a generic design framework for online course development to frame some of the key decision points involved in attempting to create effective global learning experiences.  Chief among the key components for globalized learning in higher education is the development of global learning outcomes based on the ideals of the concept of global citizenship.  Well-crafted global learning outcomes are the starting point for effective online course pedagogical practices.

 Objectives:

  • Discuss the idea of Global Citizenship and how the global competencies contained within this ideal align with your course’s content and globalization goals.
  • Using the AAC&U Global VALUE rubric, examine how course specific global learning outcomes (GLOs) align with dimensions of student development along the active citizenship continuum.
  • Write effective global student learning outcomes (GSLOs) that target high order thinking skills and promote intercultural interaction and collaboration.
  • Cross-reference the rubric to instructional strategies that optimize the achievement of the GLOs
