Full Session Description (one paragraph minimum):
Today’s student will come of age in a world that is inherently globalized. From buying fruit in the supermarket to conducting a transaction at the bank, volunteering at a local food pantry to voting in the next election, our lives are interconnected with those of the global community. We must equip our students with all the tools that they will need to be global citizens. Students must also be able to work collaboratively with those around them, and to maintain respect for diverse perspectives, work styles, and cultures.
In addition, students will face a world filled with complex challenges that must be solved using a global focus—extreme poverty and hunger, HIV/AIDS and other diseases, child mortality, armed conflict, and many others. These systemic problems require students to think in a systems-based approach—one that is not developed through standardized testing alone.
New Global Citizens is a non-profit organization that provides youth with a global perspective, an opportunity to create change and the skills they need to thrive in the global knowledge economy. NGC offers students and teachers a framework for boosting student knowledge of global issues, while also developing the skills and agency to make change in the world. Through the NGC Co-curricular program, we provide a comprehensive program of study to develop students’ Global IQ, through a hands-on approach to skills development and global competency and aligned with Common Core Standards and 21st Century Skills. In addition, NGC offers an After School program for students interested in developing their own Global IQ. By focusing on a student-led approach, NGC After School teams are able to connect to their world and to make change in their community and abroad. Both the Co-curricular program and the After School program connect students with global partners for whom they will advocate and raise funds to support sustainable solutions to global issues.
In this session, participants will learn about the New Global Citizens mission, NGC’s 10 Global Issues, Global Partners, as well as the general framework for both of the Co-curricular and After School programs.
