Full Session Description (one-paragraph minimum):
Culturally-relevant (Ladson-Billings, 1995) computer-based learning environments can increase opportunities for building education-related connections between school & home, while leveraging the cultural values and epistemic diversity all around us in our Global society. Hip-hop culture (i.e., emceeing, deejaying, graffiti art, breakdancing) combined with digital audio workstations can be leveraged to promote active and effective learning in a variety of K-12 content areas. Darius (2012) explored how hip-hop artists constructed a sense of democratic education and pedagogy with transformative possibilities in their schools and communities.
During this session, Beth and I will describe how we used hip hop pedagogy, digital audio workstations, iPads, and Edmodo to increase nineteen 4th grader's writing and creativity skills, while making stronger connections between home and school during the 2011- 2012 school year. We will discuss the implications of using these approaches to foster 21st Century digital content creation skills, social networking skills, team work skills, performance skills, developing cultural respect, and general possibilities of using music technology and media to impact teaching in a variety of K-12 content areas. Finally, we will discuss how these methods can be used to make cultural connections between classrooms in different countries using Skype, Edmodo, Facetime, and other platforms.
At this time we do not have permissions to share photograph or video footage of the 4th grade participants. However, we will share audio data obtained from participant interviews in addition to beats and Mp3 audio rendered raps shared by the 4th grade participants. Three of the participants' rap songs are attached as MP3 files. Please click the file attachment links below to listen.
