Short Session Description (one line):
Cutting Through the Common Core (State Standards) Using a Global Approach
Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
All across the U.S., educators are narrowly focusing in on the recently released Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Despite the efforts of the Asia Society and other international organizations, the larger global perspective is largely being overlooked. Many educators are still unfamiliar even with the basic concept of Global Competence. This presentation will briefly analyze the movement towards a national standards regime in the US and make a case for broadening the discussion of global education beyond PISA scores and Finnish Lessons.
Acknowledging that busy teachers need help introducing global perspectives, this presentation will highlight local resources that have a global reach. It will suggest some ways to connect schools, teachers and students with international peers through fun and educational projects. Administrators and teachers will find this presentation useful as it will illustrate how closely the CCSS are aligned with larger goals within Global Education. A “passport” to free travel is also included at the conclusion of this presentation. This presentation is the result of research done as part of a teacher leadership grant, which was generously funded by NEA.

Another related resource I want to provide a link to in advance is Mapping the Nation. This website is an interactive resource for analyzing how global we are based on a number of interesting indicators. Teachers and students alike can hone in on their state and even their county data.
