Short Session Description (one line):

VIF International will discuss a Global Ready Teacher designation through the presentation of an innovative digital badging system recently launched on the VIF Learning Center.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

Presenters will introduce the session with a brief overview of Global Gateway,  a rigorous professional development (PD) program comprised of online PD modules, a resource library of teacher-created and exemplar curriculum, and a social community of peers.  There are currently over 4400 U.S. and international in-service teachers participating in Global Gateway across multiple states in the southeast.   Global Gateway teachers earn hours that apply towards renewal credits, and digital badges that endorse their global education expertise.

The discussion will focus on two key global education initiatives: 1)  the recently launched (and first of it’s kind!) digital Global Ready badging system for teachers to enable recognition and endorsement for their growing expertise as a global educators; 2) developing partnerships with national and international global education organizations, universities, and U.S state departments of education to build a Global Ready designation.

The presentation will cover key criteria that must be met for teachers to achieve Global Gateway digital badges, that include:

  • Engaged participation in online modules that build global content knowledge and inquiry-based pedagogical practices in the classroom;

  • Collaborative online discussions focused on module resources;

  • Creation of a project-based inquiry lesson plan and evidence of classroom implementation.

After the badge is granted in the VIF Learning Center, teachers are able to push out their badge to an external “backpack. This enables them to share their digital badge and growing portfolio to their professional and social networks.

Global Gateway’s digital badging reflects the rigor of the PD content and aligns with its core instructional design.  As part of the presentation, facilitators and participants will also engage in discussion focused on each of the global competence learning spirals - Understanding, Investigating, Connecting and Integrating.  Each of these provide teachers with multiple touch points so they incrementally and developmentally gain the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to become an effective global educator.
