I am teaching an epistemology class this term, and for the past two days we have been having a discussion in an attempt to answer the questions: "What is the goal of education? What should it be?" It's been a fascinating conversation, and we've been having with others on Coveritlive.com, which is a live blogging software program; I have a student transcribe the conversation as we go, and I've also been recording it then uploading the podcasts later. We'd love to get others involved. Actually a very basic question, but too often ignored.
The goal of education should not be to improve ones labour market value!
The goal of education should be to enable an individual to critically relect his/her environment, discover his/her own interests and learn how to lead a self-determined life.
For such an education to be successful you need sociology, ethnology, philosophy and a few more social sciences which are very important for a functioning democracy, but don't have any market value!
Due to the increasing commercialisation of education such contents are now being almost totally removed. By nature governments and economic actors have no interest in providing such education, it is "only" in the interest of the people as a whole.
A new global education movement is in the making, uniting groups struggling against the commercialisation of education around the world.
There is a "Reclaim your Education - Global Week of Action 2009" coming up in April.
