Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
This session’s title is a play on Sigmund Freud’s Psychic Apparatus in which the Ego (self perception) is assumed to play a role in individual and group identity (ID) formation around symbols. Public Education, Social Education, and Consumer Education play increasingly apparent roles in human perception and identity formation of social norms, in-, and out-groups. The influence of education will be explored in three sections:
1. “Pink ribbons, red stars, and school spirit” - Public Identity via symbolism
2. “He/she speaks Chinese, lives in China, eats Chinese food, but sure doesn’t look Chinese” – Social Identity
3. “Man he got the Velcro” – Brand Identity and Consumer Ed.
The session will be wrapped up in a discussion of educator’s roles in self-identity formation and the challenges identity formation faces in the swath of global connectivity.
