ESL Students and Digital Literacy: The New Equalizer in Education
Full Session Description (one paragraph minimum):
Many educators do expose ESL K-12 students to technology-rich environments. They do so out of the conviction that ESL students should learn English first before using technology. The presentation is based on the assumption that schooling that does omit technology from instruction and learning has the potential to create barrier to learning for students. This session will make the case that technology-infused classrooms, instruction and learning will have the following positive effects. They will:
- Teach literacy, including digital one
- Motivates students
- Make it easier to bring the students’ cultures into the US classroom so that other students will be more global thinkers
- Equalize the playing field between English native speakers and non-native speakers
Further, the session will discuss the following:
- Concept of digital literacy, digital natives/immigrants, learner needs
- The TESOL International TESOL Technology standards and what they mean for teachers in schools
