School or Organization Name: Center for Curriculum Redesign
Area of the World from Which You Will Present: Boston, Massachusetts
Language in Which You Will Present: English
Target Audience(s): Teachers and curriculum specialists
Short Session Description (one line): This session revisits the ‘why’ and ‘what’ of curricula and re-evaluates what students really need to know so that they can become active citizens of the world.
Full Session Description (as long as you would like): The last major changes to curriculum were effected in the late 1800’s as a response to the sudden growth in societal and human capital needs. As the world of the 21st century bears little resemblance to that of the 19th century, education curricula need to be deeply redesigned so that students have the global competencies they need to thrive. Adapting to 21st century needs means revisiting the ‘why’ and ‘what’ of curricula and re-evaluating what students really need to know. Focusing on the four dimensions of Knowledge, Skills, Character and Meta-Learning and the interplay between them we can create the future of curricula so that students learn ‘what’ they need to to become better, connected citizens capable of solving society's most pressing challenges.
