Short Session Description (one line):

Turning static ebooks into Book2Cloud editions transforms a “text” into a collaborative learning experience.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

An ebook transforms static text on paper into the same static text on a screen. While e-readers add some flexibility such as highlighting, note taking, and other features such as instant word definitions, a Book2Cloud edition is quite different. By text, we mean a body of thought, whether in textual form, audio, or video or any other remix of thought into a capsule idea. The Book2Cloud seeks to turn content into context in order to develop deeper meaning as we develop our skill of learning how to learn. It becomes the development of what I can understand from a text but at the same time join with others to develop collective understanding or collaborative intelligence. It is developing the personal expertise in a way that contributes to the study group that is constructing and creating on the shoulders of every participant.

Thus, the Book2Cloud has a simple structure with a participatory challenge. It presents an original text and then invites the individual and the group to play with the ideas and create. Create what? Build what? Remix what? Building So what? What's next?

Such ideas are in line with the work of John Seeley Brown in his book: A New Culture of Learning and a forthcoming book by David Weinberger: Too Big to Know among many other thinkers about the present and future of education in a new age of information and technology.

The Book2Cloud challenges the teacher to become a coach; to incorporate PLAY and TINKERING of ideas in a study group where we may fail, fail, fail, but after some practice we create and epiphany; a cognitive transformation. The emphasis is on creative construction of new perspectives that drive not only thought, but doing and action. One of the approaches to this process is digital curation promoted by Joyce Valenza in her blog and presentations.

During this presentation, we will demonstrate several Book2Cloud editions of classical works of addresses, poetry, and children’s stories.

These Book2Cloud editions are free and designed to spur collaborative adult coaching among classroom teachers, technology coaches, teacher librarians and other specialists.

Participate with us in a creative brainstorm of possibilities.

Thanks for your submission to present at the 2011 Global Education Conference. Your proposal looks promising, but could benefit from some additional language that ties your work to the conference theme of global collaboration. Your proposed session may imply global collaborations and connections, but we need to see more explanation of how your work ties into our mission.  The conference seeks to present ideas, examples and initiatives related to connecting educators and classrooms around the world with an emphasis on promoting global awareness and instilling global competency in students. This is not a general education conference nor a technology conference. Please review your submission and adjust accordingly, so that participants clearly understand how your work fits into the mission of the conference.
