Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

Ms. Jenkins' sophomore world history students approach absolutism with a creative and global flair. Students spend the month of January working in project based learning groups to explore a nation impacted by absolutism as covered in our world history textbook. In conjunction with curriculum, students (we are a 1:1 school) use technology to investigate their nation with their peers, fulfilling one of five given roles in the project. Throughout the unit-long process, students work to make connections with their studies and historical themed travel opportunities that exist within their nation of study. Arrangements are coordinated by the teacher for students to correspond with natives of their location of study (usually teenagers or same age peers) to explore cultural themes with a resident of their nation of study. The project culminates with the publishing of a website which showcases a historical and culturally themed trip that students have designed in their nation-based group to design and create.

This globalized unit plan incorporates 21st century skills, including but not limited to cooperative learning, technical writing, active research, cognitive and interpersonal skills, marketing skills, budgeting, and time management.

From an education standpoint, this unit incorporates CCSSO/Asia Society's Global Competencies, cross-curricular connections, multiple-intelligence based roles, individual and group grading, and room for differentiation.

This session will provide educators and parents with the resources necessary to adapt resources for their own use as well as networking opportunities to form global connections. Students will share their experiences with the project as well as their final products.
