Full Session Description (as long as you would like): Several years ago, organizations in New York joined together to collaborate on approaches to integrate global learning in the after school time, for all grade levels. Concepts addressed included what is meant by global learning, themes and activity plans for different grade levels for teaching about global learning, and creating global learning projects for after school. Topic areas covered include:
- Hunger and food around the globe: How Healthy are We?
- Investing in others: How Does it Impact the World?
- A diverse community: Who's my Neighbor?
- Global education: Why Learn?, and
- Sustaining our world: What Does it Mean?
After school offers an opportunity to integrate experiential learning about the world and help young people learn about their role in the world. The approach is based on the belief that to work, produce and participate in a global society young people need to have:
- Knowledge of other world regions, cultures and global issues
- Skills to communicate and collaborate in cross cultural environments and languages other than English
- Values of respect and concern for other cultures, peoples and places.
