Short Session Description (one line): Participants will learn strategies for teaching kids of all ages about global poverty and address strategies for teaching kids living in poverty.
Full Session Description (as long as you would like): For the past 24 years, I’ve taught in predominantly high poverty schools in the USA. In 2013, I began a collaboration with an education based NGO in Rio de Janeiro to help my students and myself understand global poverty better and to build a more developed sense of global understanding and social responsibility among us all. As a result of this collaboration, I am now Director of Project Favela, an education-based NGO in one of the world’s largest favelas. In addition to having amassed a large repertoire of research-based strategies for teaching kids “in” poverty, I curate and develop curriculum materials for teaching kids “about” poverty. In this session, teachers will learn how poverty affects children cognitively and socially, but also how teachers can approach these problems. Concrete examples from both inner-city classrooms in the USA and favela classrooms in Brasil will be shared. Additionally, teachers will take a look at multiple resources for teaching their own students, whether primary or secondary, about poverty around the globe.
