Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
In 2006, the World Wide Workshop launched Globaloria (www.Globaloria.org), a global social network for learning through game design. The goal of Globaloria is to leverage the power of social media technology and game design to enhance learning, innovation, entrepreneurship, and an understanding of the world in economically disadvantaged and technologically under-served communities.
Globaloria is a student-driven blended learning platform and social learning network. Students collaboratively design and program educational games and interactive simulations with a global civic focus, moving at their own pace and taking an original idea to final product. Students learn communications, technical and scientific thinking skills at the same time they are mastering math, science and literacy content critical for success in college and life in a global knowledge economy. Leveraging the power of social networking and Web2.0 for learning, students invent, build and share their original games collaboratively and transparently on the network.
At the core of Globaloria is a rigorous professional development platform, training, and support system designed to empower educators to master how to run effective blended-learning classes and integrate 1:1 computing with game-design and content studies in their learning environment. Support is provided in the form of summer training programs, monthly webinars, on-line resources, daily programming help desk, and bi-weekly check-ins by fellow educator-mentors. A Leadership Inspiration program serves to engage superintendents, principals and curriculum specialists, ensuring a 360 degree commitment to a global education through innovation.
As of 2011, Globaloria has reached over 4000 students in more than 20 countries across the globe. The largest Globaloria implementation is currently in the United States where more than 2000 youth in five states are engaging in global STEM learning across the network.
