Diversifying and globalizing ESL/EFL teacher preparation programs through "study abroad" at home
Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
Studying internationally is often a challenge to pre- and in-service teachers because of teacher preparation curriculum requirements, work and family. However, understanding education in a wider context than the little red school house down the street--and the little red school house down the street may be filled with newcomers to the U.S.--is essential. One way to diversify and globalize ESL and Bilingual Education teacher preparation programs is to study, analyze and participate in the many neighborhoods and communities of a city, in this case, Chicago, Illinois. In this session, we will present curriculum included in the course Cross Cultural Studies in a Bilingual Education Program. Students also will present their digital Cultural Mapping Projects, in media res as well as completed, and discuss global awareness gained through as well as questions emerging from this kind of intercultural work. Presenters will also reflect on how these projects have changed their perspectives on what it means for teachers of English Learners to be global educators. Presenters will show a digital library of cultural maps of Chicago neighborhoods, created for future and current teachers. Activities and curriculum presented also could be used in undergraduate general education sociology/anthropology courses as well as in secondary classes, both in the U.S. and abroad.
