During this exciting session, author of Growing Up Global (www.growingupglobal.net), Homa Tavangar and Becky Morales, creator of the blog Kid World Citizen (http://kidworldcitizen.org/) will unveil for the first-time their findings, tips and tools contained in their forthcoming book, Going Global in Elementary School: A Toolkit for a Week, a Month or a Year. The community of global educators is highlighted in the book, and the interaction from this session will help to inform and enrich content as the book is being written. Tavangar and Morales will share activities around Common Core standards for grades K-5, tech- and non-tech ways to incorporate authentic global learning in every subject area and for school-wide initiatives, and examples of real kids and real classrooms making a difference globally and incorporating their service-learning into topics ranging from science, math and literature to physical education and character-building. We'll also share sample materials for gaining administrative support, recruiting a wider circle of volunteers, and building a calendar around diverse themes that enhance global learning.
We see this effort as a cooperative project that will highlight and serve educators and volunteers globally that are making great strides, and often great sacrifices, to educate global citizens. We hope that the discussion from this session might discover other needs to help fill in gaps at the K-5 level.
