Hello, my name is Garth Holman. I have been teaching for 14 years all at the middle school level (five year in E.Syr. New York, a few in Newark, Ohio and most currently in Beachwood Ohio). I also have been an adjunct professor at the University of Akron teaching the integration of educational technology at the Graduate Level.
I have been using Skype for a few years and touching base with people all over the world during my classes. One of the coolest was talking to a few people in Paris on the day after Obama was elected--how interesting to hear their ideas. I also have had my students start an online textbook in Wikibooks that keeps growing each year. I am currently offering four five-week electives online for no grade and no credit on: economics with a social conscience, modern social problems, How rock music changed America, and Day in the life.
I am looking for people to help me build "free" online electives in topics kids would be interested in doing that engage them in content not usually covered in the traditional classroom. I am also looking for others to engage students in Problem Based Learning from a distance. If you are interested please let me know: Garth Holman dgh@beachwoodschools.org. Thanks and I hope to hear from you. Garth
