School librarians work with diverse populations, so they should become globally competent. The American Library Association’s Academic and Research Libraries division has developed cultural competency standards. Several professional development options help school librarians gain and practice global cultural competency. My university is providing a course on comparative school librarianship, which will lead to the IFLA conference in Lyon, France. The International Association of School Librarians links site-based school librarians and librarian educators. The International Federation of Library Associations has a School Libraries section, which is developing international guidelines for school libraries and a toolkit on advocacy. ISTE’s librarian SIG has an international committee. The American Library Association has an international round table and global projects that school librarians can participate in. This session talks about the need for global competency, how to gain such competency, and how easily school librarians can get involved.
