Short Session Description (one line):

This will be a fact-filled discussion that will bring more clarity to the definition of "global education," drawing from findings of a recent survey of 100+ schools on 5 continents.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

There is rising interest in "global education," but meanings and purposes vary widely according to a recent survey. For instance, online learning across borders may provide information exchange about global issues, but does it accomplish the deep empathy some say is most important for intercultural competency? We often work in isolation. How do we know how we are doing? With data in hand from the first survey of its type, this workshop offers a chance to reexamine assumptions, value multiple approaches, and do this in a spirit of adventure.
  • Here's just one surprising responses from the survey of 105 schools:
75% in the U.S and 71% of all others said global education demands a different pedagogy compared to classroom teaching. (OK, now what?)
  • Here's a sample of the responses to "what are the challenges?"

“Convincing long-time administrators and teachers, especially in middle school and upper school, of the need to change curriculum and pedagogy to incorporate global education.  Most parents get it; most board members get it.  Too few administrators and teachers agree with the need.  Change in academia comes from the top.  If administrators don't push global education, it won't get done in any  systematic way.”

Workshop participants will sharpen their understanding of definitions of "global education." They will also receive a free pdf of the survey report to use in generating discussion with your faculty, your school heads, and your trustees.
