Short Session Description (one line):
An opportunity to have a glance at Brazil's educational challenge and contribute to its future through a very interactive session
Full Session Description (one paragraph minimum):
Education is one of the biggest bottlenecks for the future of Brazil. Governemnt is responsible for more than 90% of education institutions and there are several obstacles for its improvement: according to UNESCO, public teachers in Brazil are the 3rd lowest paid in the world (for basic education - 6 to 10 years old); for most of the states and cities, once a teacher passed at the respective qualification test to work for the government, there is no assesment to his/her performance in order to aplly recognition or improvement measures. Besides that teachers education, in general, does not provide future teachers with relevant information to provide learning for students.
Nevertheless, we do have some excelent public schools, either with innovative approaches or with some more traditional ones. Innovaative ones are related to democratic schools and integration of several methods of teaching, focusing on the students and the neighbourhood, Our future is to learn, adapt and implement these good examples in scale. The big challenge is how to change the way teachers are learning, are being prepared and valued (and I don't mean paied, but mainly recognized) to embrace different beliefs and values, to have different attitudes and to behave in a different way to provide learning and opportunities to themselves, to their students and to the society.
We will talk about some facts, my experience at a Change Lab course which focused on Brazilian Education and your contributions. I am not providing the presentation file in advance, but I invite you to invest some minutes to look at the file "Educator at the Valley of Learning", attached, and reflect upon the questions:
a) What should be the essence of a genuine educator?
b) What does it take to develop this genuine educator?
We will talk about our reflections and experiences during the conference: talk to you soon!
George
