Increasing Immigrant Ethiopian Children's School Readiness
P.A.C.T (Parents And Children Together) is a project aimed at empowering the Ethiopian community who immigrated to Israel and therefore the first language being other than Hebrew. The project, sponsored first by the community of Cleveland and then by Federal State of New York and Joint Israel, started as a response to the need of helping kindergarten children of Ethiopian origin improve their first grade readiness, mainly in the area of mathematics and language. The project started in Beer Sheva, Israel since this was the place where a massive concentration of Ethiopian immigrants lived. Within time, 10 more states joined the project making possible to include 14 more Israeli towns. The relationships between the sponsoring agencies and the communities in which the project was implemented were based on professional and personal dual commitment, which contributed immensely to the project's success. The work with the children included finding each child's needs, creating appropriate yet challenging tasks, involving children in small group discussion and collaboration. Results show that children who participated in the project for at least two years increased their first grade readiness much more than their counterparts.
