Co-Presenter Name(s): N/A

Area of the World from Which You Will Present: North Carolina

Language in Which You Will Present: English

Target Audience(s): Teacher Education Faculty/Administrators, Teachers, Pre-Service Teachers

Short Session Description (one line): In this presentation, I will discuss the need for international student teaching programs and a pose questions about a current research project aimed to identify the impact, if any, of an international student teaching experience on the intercultural sensitivity of a cohort of pre-service teachers.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like): According to the 2013 Open Door Data Report published by the Institute for International Education, there are more students than ever studying abroad (IIE, 2013). However, the same report reveals that education majors rank 8th on that list and only 4.1% complete an international experience while studying at an institution of higher education. This is even more alarming considering the increasingly diverse population of students in public schools today, whose needs are not being met by the current teaching workforce. The call for more culturally relevant practitioners is great, so the effort to address the need must intensify as well. In this presentation, I seek to discuss the current landscape of international student teaching programs, what is being done to promote these experiences, and the importance of intercultural sensitivity in relation to culturally relevant teaching. I then will invite audience members to brainstorm with me about a upcoming research project on the intercultural sensitivity based on the Intercultural Development Inventory (Bennett, 2004) of pre-service teachers.
