Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

The ubiquity of technology is providing K-12 schools and higher education institutions opportunities to offer online courses and programs to students of all ages through Learning Management System (LMS) platforms. The tools within an LMS enable educators to engage students in individual and group activities that lead to the acquisition and application of 21st Century Skills. Working within an LMS, also connects students locally, nationally, and internationally with other students and educators providing them with new opportunities to investigate the world beyond their own environment, to recognize and appreciate different perspectives, and the opportunity to learn to communicate ideas effectively with diverse student populations. However, many of the Web technologies built in the LMS to engage students may not optimized or used by faculty or students which can result in a lower engagement and not provide the students with the opportunities to collaborate and transfer new knowledge and skills. This presentation describes a pilot study that was conducted at a higher education institution, located in the United States, to understand how online faculty and students are using Web technologies within and outside of the LMS in online courses to support course/program outcomes and global 21st Century Skills. The information presented, including the survey designed for this study, will assist global higher education and K-12 educators and administrators conduct self-reviews to identify which technologies are being used, within and outside the LMS, to support interaction and engagement within courses and how these technologies can align with course/program outcomes and with global 21st Century workplace.
