This Primary Source study tour will explore rural and urban regions of Peru, giving participants a deeper understanding of the country's history, culture, and contemporary challenges. The tour will begin in Lima to gain a snapshot of urban development and city life, as well as an appreciation for the broader timeline of Peruvian history. We will visit the sites and open-air markets of Cuzco before heading to Aguas Calientes and the splendor of Machu Picchu. At various points along the way, we will study alongside expert weavers and ceramicists, learn from historians and archaeologists, and visit a local rural community and school. Please note that this tour—appropriate for adventurous travelers—covers a variety of altitudes and terrains and may be physically challenging for some participants.
Enrollment Information
The Peru study tour is open to all educators but requires 4-6 hours of online coursework ahead of time, as well as two orientation sessions. These sessions, to be scheduled in spring 2013, will provide participants with background information and historical context on Peru and must be completed in conjunction with the tour. Contact Jingjing Jiang at jingjing@primarysource.org if interested in enrolling for the Peru study tour. Priority will be given to teachers from schools and districts in active partnership with Primary Source.
