Co-Chair

Greetings GEC Members -

It's been a busy summer in my world with conferences, workshops, and planning for the 2011 Global Education Conference. I'd like to extend a warm welcome to all new members (almost 5200 strong now), particularly those who joined this community at the International Society for Technology in Education Conference!

Here's a quick update on a few items that may be of interest to you.

The 2011 Global Education Conference

Last year, Steve Hargadon and I developed an virtual online conference for those interested in global education. Over 100 partner organizations helped us get the word out along with an intrepid group of volunteers led by Julie Lindsay. All sessions are archived for posterity and we are planning on repeating this wonderful experience November 14-18 this year.

If you've browsed the Global Education Collaborative recently, you might have noticed that Steve has integrated the GlobalEdCon web site into our community. He also has created groups for volunteers, partners, etc and this will help us to communicate more efficiently with various factions. Please visit http://globaleducation.ning.com and click on the 2011 Conference link to see these changes first hand. Also, take a moment to sign up as a volunteer, partner or as a member of our international advisory board. If you served in these groups last year, please sign up again using this new system.

The call for proposals will open on July 20, 2011. We are focused on showcasing work relating to global collaborative projects and to organizations that promote the development of global competencies with students.Visit last year's conference site to check out the session strands and to view archived presentations for inspiration. Note that we'd love to see more presentations from students themselves this year, and more world languages represented!

Finally, we're looking for financial sponsors in order to support conference development and outreach. If you or your organization would like to be a founding sponsor, please contact Steve directly at hargadon@gmail.com for further information.

Request from Steve and Blackboard Collaborate (formerly Elluminate)

We're about to formally announce the 2011 Global Education Conference (hopefully later this week or next week--sign up at the new http://www.globaleducationconference.com to be kept informed) but before we do so I wanted to make this group aware of a contest I'm running as a part of my job at Blackboard.  The contest is connected with the new release of Blackboard Collaborate 11, and we're calling it "Collaborate for Good."

Here's how it works: Join the contest site at http://www.wecollaborate.com, and post a proposal on how you would use a free Blackboard Collaborate room to make a difference for your school, your organization, your community, or the world. Encourage your friends or "followers" to make comments supporting your proposal, with bonus points for cross-posting your ideas on your own blog. Submissions are due July 25t.  Then on August 1st we'll announce ten winners who will each get a free 50-seat room of the new Blackboard Collaborate 11.

Please post a proposal!  I can't wait to see the kind of things you'd like to do.
Steve
