Howard Blumenthal, Visiting Scholar, Annenberg / UPenn

School or Organization Name: The Annenberg School for Communication at The University of Pennsylvania

Co-Presenter Name(s): None

Area of the World from Which You Will Present: United States (Philadelphia)

Language in Which You Will Present: English

Target Audience(s): K-12 educators, and people who believe that this generation of children and teens will be both connected and global.

Short Session Description (one line): Let’s pay attention to the needs of children and teenagers in the new global, connected world.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like): Although the media marketplace has never offered more products and services to younger children, public television service ends at age nine. The internet presents an opportunity to super-serve children and teenagers (roughly 9-16), and the need for social-emotional learning, and STEAM/STEM learning has never been more profound. I am the creator and producer of the popular 1990s PBS series, Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?, and my interest in helping young people become global citizens continues to grow. That’s why I have begun to interview kids in different parts of the world, to build an international community based in cross-cultural learning, and if things go well, large-scale altruism as the kids with advantages help those without. It’s the start of what is, so far, a small effort now connecting three continents. I will describe what we have accomplished so far, what we plan to do and how we plan to do it, and l hope you will share your ideas and experiences.
