Short Session Description (one line): looking at culturally responsive teaching in an adult ed class

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

The refugee crisis in Europe means that there will be many immigrants from different cultures turning up in adult education classes all over Europe as people upskill and retrain to settle in Europe. This will be especially marked in places such as Germany and Sweden where a large number are settling.

My session will present the basics of culturally responsive teaching in the adult education context with examples and case studies. The idea of a culturally responsive classroom originated in the US where it refers mainly to K12 education. Therefore I will be exploring differences and overlaps between Europe and the US, K12 and adult ed.

Session attendees will come away with tips and tricks, resource lists and will be invited to contribute their experiences.

I was a partner in a European project which developed a course to raise awareness of these issues for adult ed teachers and I have been co-hosting the Absolutely Intercultural podcast since 2006 and will be drawing on these two sources amongst others in my session.
