Just joined Globaled Conference 2015 and will be a presenter this year. If you are still teaching middle school and are interested in a project/activity for math, I'd like to tell you about a book I authored, The Kid Who Beat Wall Street and Saved Africa, which is written for middle school age students. I run a program in the schools, using the book to discuss a whole range of social issues from poverty and prejudice, to critical thinking and changing the way these kids think about themselves and the world at large.
A by product of the above, is the introduction of the workings of the stock and commodity markets. There are a lot of opportunities for the use of math to compute buy and sell positions, as students also learn about events around the world that effect all of us.
Olee,
I'm not a math teacher, but I saw Dan Meyers speak at TEDxNYED last year and he is a fantastic resource for projects/activities. You can follow his blog: http://blog.mrmeyer.com/ and twitter feed ddmeyer for some great ideas!
