Multiplayer computer games from the perspective of teachers and students

Kids love computer and video games, and are willing to spend hours in front of a computer screen or TV. Using games, kids easily interact with people around the world and thus become part of the global world without limits associated with country, nationality or culture (Veen & Vrakking, 2006).

What are children's most favorite games? Why do they love games so much? Do these games contribute to children's education? Do these games bring them closer to understanding globalization? What are the attitudes of teachers regarding gaming? What kinds of games do teachers play?

These questions were raised for discussion in the course "Integrating simulations, games and virtual worlds in education" that is offered to graduate students enrolled in the program "Education in the Era of Information Technology" at Kaye Academic College of Education in Beer-Sheva, Israel. Participants in the program include 23 experienced school teachers and senior officials.

In order to learn about the world of children-gamers each teacher interviewed two of their students. During the interviews they asked about the games children love to play, the reasons for loving games, and the kind of games children play at school. In addition, teachers shared their attitudes towards computer games and their previous experience in gaming. Results of these surveys indicated a significant gap between teachers' and students' perceptions of computer games.

Many students mentioned that they invest a lot of time in gaming, including multiplayer network games from around the world (such as World of Warcraft, League of legends, Candy Crash, Farm Valley etc.). Most of the teachers indicated that they had no time to engage in games, and they did not play computer games at childhood. Only a few of the teachers had experience in playing the games which were popular among their students.

These findings prompted the teachers to explore the games that are popular among their students. The teachers were divided into five groups and each group explored in depth one of the games or a learning environment: World of Warcraft, SimCity, Ecoloco and Second Life. One group studied the simulation SimSchool designed for teachers. The research question was the following: What are the possible contributions to education and teaching can give a game or an environment? The findings of these studies will be described and discussed in other presentations at the conference.

Multiplayer network games are popular among children from all over the world and are the product of globalization. The gap between the students’ and teachers’ attitudes regarding these games is also a global issue, so it is important to bring up the topic to discussion at this conference. This difference may be reduced when teachers explore the added value of games.

The presentation will discuss the study’s results related to the types of games that children play, reasons for loving gaming, gender differences, the degree of integration of games in schools and teachers' testimonies of their gaming experiences and attitudes towards computer games. Discussion with the audience will focus on the ways to reduce the gap between teachers’ and students’ perceptions and the educational implications of globalization due to multiplayer network games.

(Veen & Vrakking, 2006).

(World of Warcraft, League of legends, Candy Crash, Farm Villey וכו').

World of Warcraft, SimCity, Ecoloco ו-Second Life.
