Short Session Description (one line): An insight into the role of unconscious bias within education professionals working on increasingly global education campuses.
Full Session Description (as long as you would like): Educational institutions across the world have begun to look at the performance gap and asked 'what is to be done to ensure all students have the same opportunities to maximize what they gain from the educational process?' However, there doesn't appear to be much movement on closing the gap in many areas of the world. There appears to be a mismatch between aspirations and actions, concerns and change. This talk will look at how unconscious bias may be at play, not only at the local level of teacher-student interaction but also at an intuitional level as organizations try to address the ever increasing need to be able to deliver to a truly global student population. Finally, it will consider how each of us can reflect upon our own unconscious bias, and begin to take the simple steps to overcome this natural, but often ignored phenomenon.
This session will be set up as an informative and thought-provoking look at our own schema and will pose as many questions as it will provide answers, it reflects the start of a journey and one which we hope will be helped by this early discussion about the issues.
