Dear GEC Members:
Greetings from Beijing, China, where I'm attending the Learning 2.012 conference which kicks off October 11 ( Beijing time; some sessions will be streaming). I've had an amazing week so far, visiting the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and interacting with some amazing international school educators. China is an extraordinary place, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to visit. My experiences this week have reinforced my belief that we must connect our classrooms and teach our children to understand and learn from each other if we are to address the challenges facing our planet.
That said, I'm pleased to announce several new items pertaining to our community and conference. First, the deadlines for proposals for both the standard Global Education Conference and the iEARN Annual Conference and Youth Summit have been extended from October 15 to October 29, 2012. You have nearly a two week extension to get your proposals in!
This also means that we have extended the deadline for film exhibition submissions. If you've got a digital film to share on a global topic, check out this post for more details.
Courtesy of Christopher Tully and his students at the Middle Bucks Institute of Technology in Pennsylvania, USA, we have two new videos on our web site, one of which explains the conference proposal process and the other gives a brief overview of our online community. In the last couple of weeks, we announced a new strand of the conference sponsored by BrainPOP on gaming. We're also pleased to announce today another new strand and partnership with EdSurge and Cisco's education leadership site, GETideas.org, focused on global technology-driven innovation. Here's the lowdown from EdSurge's newsletter:
CALLING STARTUPS WITH A GLOBAL VIEW: A WORLD'S EYE VIEW: For the third year, the essential Global Education Conference run by Steve Hargadon and Lucy Gray will fill the week of November 12-16 with an online jam session of thousands of educators from around the globe. This is a event seeks to connect educators and classrooms around the globe, with a strong dash of cultural awareness. This year, courtesy of Cisco's GETIdeas, there will be a special "technology-driven Innovation" track that will feature about two dozen product startups and/or organizations actively supporting international education collaboration. (Read the mission statement here.) This is not an environment for pitching products--but it rather a venue for discussing the value of international collaboration and the technologies that promote those connections. Those groups will lead 60-minute online sessions and get to post an essay on the GETideas.org blog. Want to apply? Drop a note to Tony@edsurge.com and tell us how you're promoting global collaboration and what your session will be about. Applications are due by October 29 -- so don't wait!
