Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
Bringing complex global issues to your classroom could be challenging, and high-quality, child-friendly resources on current events can be expensive. With Global Citizenship Briefs, though, it’s easy and free! Each Brief consists of a beautiful student magazine on a current humanitarian emergency affecting children, supported by lesson plans, activities, and multi-media investigations. In this session, educators from TeachUNICEF (the U.S. Fund for UNICEF Education Department) will present on their two newest Global Citizenship Briefs. In Philippines: Building Back Better, against the background of the Philippines’ Super Typhoon Haiyan, students learn about disaster risk reduction amid the new normal of climate change. The just-published Special Edition: Stop Ebola teaches students about the vulnerabilities facing children in Ebola-affected countries and how UNICEF—with students’ help—is working to fight the epidemic. Through a tour of the resources and participation in interactive activities, you will learn how you can use these materials to promote the civic and global competence necessary to be successful in an increasingly interconnected world.
