OnEdMentors Connect: Personalized Professional Mentorships to Build Capacity in Education
Quality education rests on many factors. As a Global Goal, teacher lifelong learning is a key contributor to cultivating skill and building capacity. In a global world, equity and inclusivity can come from people’s access to others for the purpose of collaboration, idea sharing and building, skill development, reflection, and much more. The goal of ONEdMentors Connect is to help improve teacher capacity by giving educators opportunities for personalized and self-directed mentorships without borders.
In February 2017, when voicEd Radio was just beginning, Noa Daniel was invited to become part of a panel of educators interested in diving deeply into educational trends and issues on a weekly radio show called OnEdMentors. The show began with a focus on supporting preservice teachers and has evolved to be a place where a variety of aspects of education are discussed in order to support preservice, new and seasoned teachers alike. This has become the longest running show in the growing community and a hub of educational conversation, resources and springboards. The hosts, Stephen Hurley (chief catalyst and founder), Derek Rhodenizer and Noa Daniel, wanted to find a way to extend this climate of collaboration beyond the radio.
Leigh Cassell, an educational change maker and innovator, founded Digital Human Library (dHL) in 2011 to address the urban and rural gap in education by providing students with digital access to people, places and ideas from around the world. Today, Digital Human Library creates opportunities for thousands of K-12 teachers and students to learn with the world through social innovation projects, interactive 1:1 video conferences, engaging live streamed educational programs, and the largest collection of educational virtual tours and virtual reality of the web. dHL is a resource that provides teachers and students with unlimited access to the field trip experience, anytime, anywhere at no cost.
In January, Noa and Leigh started talking about how they could use the dHL and voicEd Radio spaces to extend the OnEdMentors offering. Over many months, they have developed a collaborative inquiry to explore how they could create a framework for teacher self-directed learning through mentorships called OnEdMentors Connect.
Join us to learn more about the OnEdMentors Connect mentors and mentees, and how OnEdMentors Connect has evolved to become a collaborative inquiry project in the making. Our presentation will showcase each phase of the project—from the pilot leading to full open access for educators in Ontario and beyond beginning September 2019. Our goal is connect and collaborate with other educators so we can extend our understanding of how to iterate this offering in order to make it accessible to educators from across the globe and populate the OnEdMentors Connect Catalogue in Digital Human Library. Let’s work together to improve teacher agency and efficacy and to promote quality personalized professional learning for all.
