Pathways to Understanding the Other: Developing Students’ Global Competence

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
This session will highlight the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) as designed by Milton Bennett and its application in the programming and curriculum design in higher education. Very often those of us working in the field of global/international/intercultural education miss the important markers of our learners and focus mostly on skill and knowledge development. This session will provide the audience with a successful campus wide programming model that enhances students’ learning and development of not only knowledge and skill, but awareness and sensitivity (attitudes and behaviors) associated with developing global competences. Assessment tool used to measure this development and its outcomes will be presented as well. Model is highly adaptable and replicable to other programs and institutions.

  • Hi Aleks,

I am glad to hear about your work, and I am absolutely agree that Global Ethics, Global Awareness and Competence should be developed first or along with knowledge and skills. My research highlights the importance of the other part of this issue. The development of awareness and ethics only would not help to solve global problems and develop strategies, we need to develop thinking abilities to reach this goal. I look forward to your presentation.
